SAGE is the world’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ older people. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is an organization that advocates with and on behalf of and offers supportive services and resources to LGBTQ+ older people and their caregivers.
SAGE was founded more than 40 years ago off the momentum of the Stonewall uprising and the burgeoning LGBTQ+ civil rights movement in the United States. SAGE maintains the largest repository of expertise on LGBTQ+ aging issues in the world and sponsors the world’s largest capacity-building programs for LGBTQ+ aging advocates and service providers. SAGE offers services to LGBTQ+ elders; advocates for policy reform; provides technical assistance and training; coordinates affiliates throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico; and is a founding member of the Diverse Elders Coalition. Reflective of the tremendous diversity of older LGBTQ+ people, SAGE collaborates with partners from LGBTQ+, aging, anti-racism, and other movements to advance collective goals. SAGE runs the National Resource Center on LGBTQ+ Aging and has also trained and credentialed hundreds of elder care providers on LGBTQ+ cultural competence. SAGE also plays an important role in global LGBTQ+ aging advocacy, including vis-à-vis the LGBTI Elders Advancing Initiative in collaboration with partners in four countries in Central America and Asia.
