Dr. Vega is a medical doctor, specialising in Gerontology and Geriatrics. He holds a Master of Public Health and Aging from the Medical University of Havana and was Research Fellow on Geriatrics at the University of Goteborg in Sweden. From 1991-2005. Dr. Vega was Deputy Director of the Center of Research on Aging and Health, National Director for Older Persons Care for the Ministry of Health and Chair of Health and Aging at the National School of Public Health in Cuba. He was also Secretary General of the Latin American Committee of the International Association of Gerontology. Dr. Vega is active in academia and has been a Professor of Gerontology and Geriatrics at the Medical University of Havana since 1992 and is Associate Professor at the Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work in Florida International University. Dr. Vega was subsequently appointed as the Regional Advisor on Aging and Health at PAHO/WHO until in 2015, he was promoted to his current position as PAHO/WHO Unit Chief for the Healthy Life Course Unit.
