Maria Varlamova is currently a Doctoral Researcher at the Jagiellonian University (Poland) within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions ITN EuroAgeism and EIWO projects, and as a consultant, is supporting WHO in developing indicators and meta-data for the monitoring and evaluation framework of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing. Having her background in demography, she is engaged in fundamental and applied projects in the area of population ageing, active ageing, employment of women with children, social protection of the population, and effectiveness of family and population policies. She is a former member of the Expert Group on Active Ageing Index and was in charge of developing the Guidelines on Active Ageing Index in non-EU countries and at the subnational level for the UNECE.
