Yo, Is This Ageist?

Advocacy Campaigns

Year started: 2015

Yo, Is This Ageist? is a tumblr blog in Q&A form, where people can submit text, images, photos, links, or videos and ask my opinion as to whether or not the material is ageist. It was inspired by Yo, Is This Racist?, as I acknowledge, and uses the related name with permission. Yo, Is This Ageist? was started in 2016, so it contains a substantial archive. In 2021 I began making short video clips about some of the questions, which are available on the YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLgpTfeLydvf5PKEvYBaVmQ).

Objectives

Relative to most other forms of prejudice, ageism remains relatively unexamined. It takes many forms, from self-directed bias to horrendously offensive memes, to which people often do not know how to respond—or even recognize. I created the Yo, Is This Ageist? blog to give people a safe place (submissions can be anonymous) to ask whether something they've seen, or heard, or done is ageist. Their questions raise complicated issues that involve ethics, popular culture, and other moving targets. I work hard to provide them with balanced and instructive answers.

Scope

It's aimed at the general, English-speaking public.
