International Accreditation of Competences in Health Care for Older Persons (ACAPEM)

Training Programme

Status Active

Year started 2016

The International Accreditation of Competences in Health Care for Older Persons (ACAPEM) is a training strategy in the Region of the Americas to strengthen the competencies of health professionals in the care of older people. Older people have particular characteristics associated with their care, which require a response from health systems. The training of health professionals to respond to these needs is fundamental for the development of skills necessary for the adequate care of older persons in the Region of the Americas, and also to strengthen health systems.

Objectives

Objectives: (1) To improve the perceptions, attitudes and skills of health professionals for the care of older people in the framework of a health system led by Primary Care; (2) To generate awareness in participants of the need to acquire new competencies linked to the challenge that ageing grants and, with this, to promote interest in obtaining higher accreditations (intermediate and advanced); (3) To interpret function-focused assessment as a priority in their clinical practice; (4) To recognise basic criteria in clinical decision-making and identify formal and informal actions and resources to optimise care.
