Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo

Director General

National Institute of Geriatrics, Mexico

Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo has been committed to improving the lives of older people, their families, and their communities since the beginning of his professional career. His early interest led him to train as a geriatrician in France (1988), when the speciality did not yet exist in Mexico, and years later he obtained his master's degree and doctorate in the same country. Drawing on his training and education, he later founded and became head of the geriatrics service at the National Institute of Medical Sciences in Nutrition ‘Salvador Zubirán’, one of the most prominent health institutes in Mexico.

One of Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo's most significant achievements is the creation of the National Institute of Geriatrics, recognised by decree of the President of the United Mexican States in May 2012. This work resulted in the establishment of the Institute of Geriatrics, which laid the foundations for what years later would become the National Institute of Geriatrics (INGER).

As a result of Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo's leadership, the INGER is a Research and Teaching Centre in Mexico that has transformed the paradigm on ageing, through the production of new knowledge, its dissemination and use, as well as the development of human resources. Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo's life project has now been consolidated in a National Health Institution dedicated to reorient public policies, give new meaning to older age and give visibility to the changing situation of population health. It has also allowed national and international forums to recognise, analyse and open conversations about the urgency of incorporating better ways of measuring health as we age, as well as monitoring both the health and functioning of older people and populations.

A moral leader of geriatricians in Mexico, Luis Miguel Gutiérrez-Robledo has trained countless specialists and researchers, but he has also promoted public policies in favour of older people, especially those related to long-term care, non-discrimination and integrated care. He is a pioneer of geriatrics in Mexico and stands as an inspiration to show what is possible to achieve with vision, determination, and commitment.
